Challenges

Hip dysplasia affects around 3% of newborns worldwide, often requiring months of immobilization using heavy plaster casts. These casts create major challenges related to hygiene, skin irritation, repeated anaesthesia, and daily care for families.

Hipcare reimagines this treatment through a customized 3D-printed splint made from PLA with copper particles. The lattice structure improves breathability and hygiene, while thermoforming enables a precise fit that ensures proper immobilization during recovery.

Hipcare demonstrates how digital fabrication can transform traditional medical treatments by combining customization, advanced materials, and patient-centered design.

The project received strong international recognition, including the Gold Award at the Braun Design Awards, as well as distinctions from Circulathon by SABIC – Healthcare, iF Design Awards (Selected), the ADI Medal, and the European Product Design Awards, highlighting its potential to redefine standards in pediatric orthopedic care.
